Dear activist,
Let me first of all thank the many of you who came to the 8th PES Congress in Prague. I am very happy to report that the Congress has entrusted me with the mandate to continue building the PES into a stronger European party over the coming two and a half years. I am counting on your support as we work hard to change the political priorities of Europe, to increase our influence in the European institutions and to strengthen our political family.
In Prague we took another important step towards a stronger PES: All PES parties agreed a pact to work together to make the 21st century the progressive century.
In today’s globalised world a strong PES is a precondition for strong national PES parties. Today no European nation can shape the future for its people alone; through cooperation and democratically shared sovereignty, the European Union can give our countries and our people the power we have lost to global forces. To promote a progressive agenda in our societies the national parties and the PES need to be complementary forces fighting for the same aims.
The PES Congress in Prague has given a mandate to further elaborate our vision on shaping the European agenda. Over the next two and a half years the PES will launch a democratic process to develop our new governing programme for Europe, to be adopted at the next Congress.
The Prague Congress furthermore prepared the grounds for a strong PES campaign in 2014. The PES agreed to chose our Commission President candidate in a democratic and transparent process the year before the elections. That enables us to approach citizens with a vision, a programme and a candidate that demonstrates our ambition: We want a progressive Europe that puts people first.
Another important decision was to make PES Leaders a driving force through increased cooperation. In their meetings, strategic political issues will be debated and decided to determine our common direction. The PES will furthermore strengthen the integration of PES member parties and organisations with decision-making responsibilities in the EU institutions in its work. We will revitalize our PES issue-based networks and working groups and we will set-up a PES network on modernising politics.
Additionally, the role of PES activists has been recognized in the PES statutes and we will create a ‘PES activists initiative’. This ‘right of initiative’ will enable our grassroots members to express themselves directly to PES party bodies. .Over the next year we will put the procedures for this initiative in place
Prague was a fresh start for Europe’s socialists and social democrats. We will modernise our way of doing politics – Building the bridge between our national and our European parties. By acting together, in unison, at local, regional, national and European levels we will achieve our goal of shaping progressive societies. We have a lot of work to do together; I look forward to seeing you soon!
With socialist regards,
Poul Nyrup Rasmussen
PES President.
